Self Defense ammunition requires a certain power level and premium bullet construction to stop an attack.   Police departments use ammunition that has proven in prior incidents that it will stop an iattack.   Often ammunition that will kill the attacker will leave him able to complete his attack.   Self defense ammunition must have the effect of immediately stopping the attack.  The purpose of self defense ammunition for concealed carry is to immediately stop an attack and not to kill.  Premium  bullet construction and power levels are important.   Common rounds used by police departments include CCI Speer Gold Dot, Remington Golden Saber, Wincehster SXT.  Ammunition that has proven effective by police departments include:

9mm Bullets from 123-127 grains pushed to 1250 feet per second

357 sig 125 grain bullets at 1300 to 1400 feet per second with one shot stops often to non fatal areas of the body. Excellent if not the best results.  Very similar to 357 magnum.

40 S&W 155 grain at 1200 fps or 165 @ 1140-1150 fps

10mm  too few departments and too little field from actual shootings however any round that is listed for 40 S&W would have the same results.

45 acp 130 grain @ 880 fps
